Idea – to use our dimmer set

industrial-squirrel-cage-bulb - William and Watson

Why is lighting important?

Lighting is one of the most important elements of interior design. We have natural lighting and artificial lighting, and today I want to tell you about a beautiful product I have been lucky enough to review.

Artificial lighting can offer something that most other pieces of furniture can’t: different moods and atmospheres. Whether you’re reading a book in bed, having an evening drink with friends in your living room or watching a horror film, artificial lighting can be both practical and atmospheric. It can also be a great statement feature, too. But finding something that ticks both these boxes? Well… that brings me on to William and Watson.

Who are William and Watson?

Wiiliam and Watson are a team of creative artists who are continually looking for new designs to create and put their soul into. This goes far beyond just your standard light bulb – their products are a go-to if you’re hoping to design your dream home, and it’s their finishing touches that give you that all-important wow factor. I remember walking past their stall in London last year, picking up their business card and deciding to check them out later. I really loved the look of their products back then, and now I have one of my own to tell you all about!

Why spend £50+ on lighting?

Finding the right light for your home can be a struggle, especially if you don’t want to spend a fortune! But trying to find something which is perfect for your home, a good price and from a reputable company is even harder. I look for the right light first, but the next best selling point for me is the brand and story behind the product. A well-known high street shop doesn’t really connect with me. Being able to ‘connect’ (no pun intended) with your supplier and saying directly “I would like this colour, this amount of cable with this lamp” makes the buying process a wonderful journey. It’s practically bespoke, and therefore a more meaningful item for years to come.

What are my thoughts?

This plugin lamp holder comes with a lovely 4 metre brown twisted fabric cable: it looks and feels great, and it has a nice dimmer switch with a very satisfying on/off click… I just love satisfying clicks, don’t you? It also has a black plug to colour match the dimmer switch and has the correct safety components/diagrams attached. I have seen a few other businesses using similar plugs, but sadly theirs are designed in such a way that allows you to fit something conductive in the gap and cause electric shock. While these plugs are legal, William and Watson have wisely included a rubber cable grip instead which is offers much better safety.

I have to be honest and say that I’ve purposely looked out for defects, and being a qualified Electrician myself, I feel very confident recommending this lamp to anyone – if I were to create my own similar product I would most certainly be aiming for this level of safety and design standard. The fact I’m using it in my own home says it all!

I love how large and vibrant the bronze lamp holder is: it really is the statement feature and think it’d look fantastic in front of an exposed brick ball hanging from a rustic hook in the corner of a room. It also comes with a bronze shade ring so you’ll be able to hang your favourite lampshade if you’d prefer.

And finally, the squirrel cage teardrop lamp is a remake of the 1910 antique Edison vintage filament lamp and is dimmable so you’ll be able to settle with whatever brightness you feel is right for the moment.

Is it available in any other colours?

This product does come in black and with different lengths of cables, however, they do offer plenty of different coloured cables so I’ll be surprised if you don’t find something perfect for you.

Does it feel like good value for money?

I have been seeking out lots of these rustic style lights for the past few years now and I have to say that, honestly, I haven’t found one that beats this quality. Other lights I’ve seen have been a little rough around the edges (i.e. the fabric cable has been frayed at the lamp and plug ends, or not as well packaged) but this product ticks all the boxes in my opinion.

Thanks very much for reading, I hope you have found this useful! If you have struggled to find some great mood lighting, I’d recommend William and Watson. Have you found any other lighting companies you really like? I’d love to know!
